  • At what age should I start taking my child to the dentist?
The American Academy of Pediatric dentistry recomends that your child should see a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than his/her first birthday.
  • What should I do if my child's tooth is knocked out?
Place the tooth in cool milk or if the child is old enough, under the child's tongue. Be real careful not to swallow the tooth and get to the dentist within 30 minutes so it can be reimplanted.
  • How does professional tooth whitening work? Is it safe?
Physician-supervised teeth whitening systems such as Zoom!® are widely considered to provide the safest cosmetic dentistry treatments. Teeth whitening is a conservative method for completely making over your smile. Chairside teeth whitening procedures are performed with a specially formulated peroxide gel that allows oxygen to permeate your tooth enamel, lifting stains. The structure of your tooth enamel is not affected. The most common side effect is temporary tooth sensitivity.
  • What are my options for crooked teeth?
Luckily, your options for correcting crooked teeth mean you don't have to endure the uncomfortable metal braces of the past! Our cosmetic dentistry practice features Invisalign®, a system of orthodontics that uses invisible plastic aligners to comfortably shift your teeth into place. Numerous other cosmetic dentistry techniques exist that can provide “instant orthodontics” that require no braces at all. Composite bonding and the application of porcelain veneers are both conservative ways to mask the appearance of crooked teeth.
  • If I am missing one or more teeth, what are my options?
Patients today have an array of options for replacing missing teeth. Dental bridges, dentures, and dental implants all have their advantages and disadvantages, though modern cosmetic and restorative dentistry has come to favor dental implants because they look and function just like real teeth and require no special care. If you have lost a tooth or several teeth, we urge you to seek treatment. Adjacent teeth can shift into the gap left by a lost tooth; in addition, a missing tooth can lead to bone loss, hygiene problems, difficulties with speaking and eating, and much more. Today’s dental restorations are better than ever, and they can give you a strong bite and a beautiful smile.
  • What is sedation dentistry? How can it help me?
Sedation (sleep) dentistry involves the use of sedative drugs so that patients who fear dental work can avoid the discomfort and anxiety associated with dental visits. With sedation dentistry, patients take a pill about an hour before their dental appointment. They arrive at our office relaxed and able to undergo treatment without feeling any pain or having any memory of the procedure. If you have avoided getting dental care because of anxiety or fear of discomfort, sedation dentistry may be the ideal solution to allow you to get essential treatment.   We have personnel specially trained to administer and monitor your vital signs during surgery. We offer everything from nitrous to oral sedation to IV sedation. The type we use depends on the procedures you are having done, and your own preferences. We'll be happy to discuss the various types of sedation with you.
  • How long will my smile makeover take?
You length of a smile makeover depends on the different procedures or treatments involved in the smile makeover. If all you need is a tooth whitening treatment, then your smile makeover can be completed in about an hour. If you need extensive work like porcelain veneers or porcelain crowns, your smile makeover may take a couple visits to the dentist office over 1 or 2 weeks. During your initial consultation, we will inform you of the treatments and procedures that will need to be performed in order to provide you with the best results. He will also tell you how long your smile makeover should take.
  • How much will my smile makeover cost?
The cost of your smile makeover depends on the number or treatments of procedures that you are having performed. If you are only having a teeth whitening treatment, then your smile makeover may be relatively inexpensive. On the other hand, if you are having extensive dental work performed, it may be more expensive. The staff at Eastpoint Dental Clinic will be happy to provide you with financing and payment options so that your smile makeover can be paid for easily. You should never have to forego a dental procedure simply because it seems too expensive.
  • I would like to correct my smile, but I am afraid of the dentist. What should I do?

Often times this can lead to poor dental health and needing to visit the dentist more than ever. Eastpoint Dental Clinic is able to provide sedation dentistry to his patients who are extremely anxious about the dentist office. A smile makeover can be the starting point for renewing your commitment to dental health.
  • What is root canal therapy?
A root canal is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or becomes infected. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. Without treatment, the tissue surrounding the tooth will become infected and abscesses may form.

"Root canal" is the term used to describe the natural cavity within the center of the tooth. The pulp or pulp chamber is the soft area within the root canal. The tooth's nerve lies within the root canal. A tooth's nerve is not vitally important to a tooth's health and function after the tooth has emerged through the gums. Its only function is sensory – to provide the sensation of hot or cold. The presence or absence of a nerve will not affect the day-to-day functioning of the tooth.
  • What is gum (periodontal) disease?
Periodontal disease is the deterioration of the supporting structures of the teeth. Also known as periodontitis, it involves progressive loss of the alveolar bone around the teeth and may eventually lead to the loosening and subsequent loss of teeth if left untreated.

Periodontitis is caused by a convergence of bacteria that adhere to and grow on the tooth's surfaces, along with an overly aggressive immune system response against these bacteria. Periodontitis is very common and in the USA has a prevalence of 30-50% of the population, but only about 10% have severe forms. A diagnosis of periodontitis is established by inspecting the soft gum tissues around the teeth with a probe and radiographs by visual analysis to determine the amount of bone loss around the teeth.
  • What are dental implants?
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that a periodontist places into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants are an ideal option for people in good general oral health who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or some other reason. While high-tech in nature, dental implants are actually more tooth-saving than traditional bridgework, since implants do not rely on neighboring teeth for support.
  • What is ridge modification?
Deformities in the upper or lower jaw can leave you with inadequate bone in which to place dental implants. This defect may have been caused by periodontal disease, wearing dentures, developmental defects, injury or trauma. Not only does this deformity cause problems in placing the implant, it can also cause an unattractive indentation in the jaw line near the missing teeth that may be difficult to clean and maintain.

To correct the problem, the gum is lifted away from the ridge to expose the bony defect. The defect is then filled with bone or bone substitute to build up the ridge. Your periodontist can tell you about your options for graft materials, which can help to regenerate lost bone and tissue. Finally, the incision is closed and healing is allowed to take place.

Depending on your individual needs, the bone usually will be allowed to develop for about four to 12 months before implants can be placed. In some cases, the implant can be placed at the same time the ridge is modified. Ridge modification has been shown to greatly improve appearance and increase your chances for successful implants that can last for years to come. Ridge modification can enhance your restorative success both esthetically and functionally.
  • Why should I replace a missing tooth?
The empty space in your mouth starts to cause many problems including decay and periodontal disease, an unbalanced bite, and stress on the remaining teeth.
  • Why do I need a crown (cap)?
A crown is needed on a tooth when the tooth is weakened by either decay, a fracture or a very large restoration. A dental crown is a tooth-shaped "cap" that is placed over a tooth – covering the tooth to restore its shape and size, strength, and/or to improve its appearance. The crowns, when cemented into place, fully encase the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line.
  • How can I avoid getting cavities?
The best way to avoid cavities is by eating right, brushing with a fluoridated toothpaste, flossing daily and visiting your dentist every six months. Children and some adults can benefit by having sealants placed.
  • Why should I have my wisdom teeth removed?
Wisdom teeth-also called third molars--may cause many problems if they aren't removed. They can crowd other teeth, shifting them, disrupting your bite and even contributing to bone loss in your jaw. Partially erupted wisdom teeth can trap food, causing tooth decay and contributing to gum disease. They may cause swelling and pain in your jaw. The longer your wisdom teeth remain in your mouth, the more potential they have to do damage-and the more difficult they are to remove. We'll be glad to evaluate the way your wisdom teeth and let you know what treatment, if any, we recommend.
